# Creating a data element or data element concept

Wizards help make metadata creation and reuse of metadata items easier. Using these wizards, you will be stepped through creating either a Data Element of a Data Element Concept.

A Data Element can be created by either using a pre-existing object class, property, and value domain, or creating new items of these types within the wizard. A Data Element Concept can be created by either using a pre-existing object class and property, or creating new items of these types within the wizard.

### How to create a complete data element or data element concept

1. Select either 'Create Metadata' from the dashboard side panel, or the creation tool from the registry header followed by 'See all'.

3. Follow the resulting wizard's steps, answering its questions as best fits your requirements and populating mandatory fields when instructed.

**Note:** When asked to pick a metadata item, if no pre-existing items fulfill your needs, a new item can be created within the wizard by selecting 'None of the above meet my needs'. The steps that follow are mostly identical to those outlined in 'Creating a metadata item with a single item creation wizard' on the next page.
